Primary Function and Applications
The core function of this anchor is to secure structures against tensile (pulling) forces by transferring the load deep into competent rock strata. Its primary use is for Earth Tension Anchoring in the utility, construction, and telecommunications industries, specifically for guying applications (stabilizing poles, towers, and structures with cables).
It is uniquely engineered for two specific geological scenarios:
Fractured Rock: Its primary application is in rock that is too fractured or broken for wedge-style rock anchors, which rely on expanding against solid, intact rock.
Rocky Soil: It is also used in overburden conditions with excessive rock that prevents the effective installation of helix screw anchors.
The anchor is designed to be installed "inline with the guy," meaning the axis of the anchor rod is aligned with the direction of the tension from the guy wire for optimal load transfer.
Key Functional Features and Design
The anchor's functionality relies on a combination of mechanical design and geological bonding:
Forged Knob End: The anchor features a forged knob at its terminal end. This knob creates a mechanical interference fit within the grout column, ensuring the steel rod and the grout mass act as a single unit to resist pull-out forces.
Grout Bonding: The holding capacity is fundamentally dependent on the bond stress between the surrounding rock and the grout (typically a cementitious or resin grout) that fills the drilled hole. The grout transfers the tensile load from the anchor rod to the rock mass.
High Tensile Strength: It is rated for a substantial ultimate tensile strength of 70,000 lb, suitable for heavy-duty guying applications.
Production Process
Steel Forging: The integral knob on the anchor rod is created through a forging process, which aligns the grain structure of the steel to enhance strength and durability at this critical load-bearing point.
Hot-Dip Galvanization: After forging, the completed rod is coated using the hot-dip galvanizing process, conforming to ASTM A153 standards. This involves immersing the steel in molten zinc to create a robust, corrosion-resistant metallurgical-bonded coating, essential for long-term performance in underground environments.
Installation
The anchor must be installed within 5° of alignment with the intended guy load direction to achieve its full strength rating; misalignment can significantly reduce its holding capacity.
A minimum embedment depth of 12 inches into solid rock below the grout is recommended.
